Current states of conCERN

As physicists and engineers, many of us are expected to attend conferences in other parts of the world. Not all places are safe or welcoming for LGBT people, so we provide information about “dangerous areas” and discourage institutes from sending people to these places. We have currently identified the following troubling areas:

Moscow, Russia
Moscow has a recent history of violence against LGBT people. In recent years the authorities have made public Pride events illegal and there have been many arrests of LGBT people during such events.
St Petersburg, Russia
St Petersburg shares a similar recent history as Moscow.
Views in Brazil concerning LGBT people are polarised. While Brazil is usually seen as being very tolerant of LGBT people, there is an alarmingly high rate of murder and violence towards LGBT people.

Attitudes in Europe

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) monitors attitudes in Europe and publishes a map of Europe to the status. As of 2015 the attitudes are varied:

In most parts of Africa like in Uganda its Illegal to be gay. If you are caught, you are imprisoned for not less than 7years and the general public sometimes beat you up. Similar stories in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and some middle east-African states.
